Happy Birthday Elvis... Gone but Never Forgotten

.

Today is Elvis Presley's birthday he is 78 years old today... Happy birthday to the king of rock-n-roll. Now I don't want to hear from any of you asking me, "what I'm talking about, don't I mean he would have been 78 because he died in 1977?"  Elvis isn't dead, he's in Witness Protection somewhere, living out his retirement golfing, fishing, and singing around the campfire.  Now don't you try to tell me any different, it will just upset me and make me cry.

Anyway, in honor of The King's birthday, I wanted to play a few of my favorite songs of his for y'all.  Hope you enjoy.....

This is my favorite Elvis song, ever:

This song is just so sexy and jazzy, I really love it:

This song always gives me chills and fits my blog perfectly:

Happy birthday, Elvis... long may you reign.

Happy 101st Birthday to my Father-in-Law

.

Today, my father-in-law, William Harry Shewbridge, would have been 101 years old. He passed away in 1993, three years before Bill and I began dating, so I never got to meet him in person. I do feel like I know him however, due to several cards and letters to my mother-in-law that Bill and I found while cleaning out their house we moved into after his mother passed away.

Harry, as he was called, wrote the most beautiful letters to Mary (my mother-in-law), they were sweet, thoughtful, and sentimental. Everyone ended with "to the swellest girl in the world, Harry." (It was the mid-30's after all.) Anyone who read these card and letters could tell that he deeply loved Mary with his whole heart and wasn't afraid to show it.  I am sure that is how my dearest Bill learned to be such a wonderful man, and if Harry were alive today, I would thank him from the bottom of my heart for being the kind of man he was so I could have the kind of man I do.

Harry's character has also carried on to another generation... Bill has taught my boys how to be just as caring, loving, thoughtful, and generous as they both are.  So to my dear Harry... Happy Birthday - I love you for giving me the most wonderful gift I could have ever receive. I wish you were here so I could give you a great big hug.

PSST..... Today is my Birthday!

.

Hello, my name is Mandie and today is my 3rd birthday.... well, as close to my birthday as I know, I don't really know when my real birthday is, I was abandoned by my original person after being hurt by him. It IS a day to celebrate, however!

Two years ago my life changed dramatically. The two most wonderful people walked into my life and they never looked back. As soon as mommy came into the room, I saw her and just knew that she was the one I wanted to be mine. So, I peered at her with my green eyes and gave her the, "please pick me up" look - and she did pick me up. I put my paws on her chest and stuck my nose under her ear and snuggled right into her. She started to scratch my ears and rub my back so softly. She gave me kisses on the top of my head - I had only been hit there before, I kind-of liked the kisses.

I sat there snuggling with her for over a half hour. I wouldn't let her look at any of the other doggies and I wouldn't let any of the other people see me. I could feel mommy's heart warming and beating in time with mine - this was love at first sight, we were meant to be together.

I didn't understand at first when she left me with the nice people who brought me to the store and they took me back to the cage - I was sad. But two days later, at Petco, I saw Mommy and Daddy come in with big smiles on their faces and a fluffy blanket, I went right into Mommy's arms and stuck my nose under her ear and snuggled with her - this time I was NOT going to let her go and neither was she!! They put me in a carriage and took me shopping for some new toys and a new bed, and even a special treat. Then we went HOME!! To my Forever Home.

I love living with Mommy, Daddy, and my brothers and sisters. I get to play all the time, I go for walks with the whole family, I get fed every day - twice a day, really good food (Mommy is a good cook), I even get treats every day, and I NEVER get hit, even if I have an accident in the house (sorry you had to wash the carpet, Daddy). I get all the love I could ever ask for... I am SO happy that Mommy and Daddy chose me to live with them.... that is the BEST birthday gift a puppy could ask for.

I love you, Mommy (you, too Daddy),
Mandie

P.S. We love you, too, Mandie! Mommy & Daddy xoxox

If you have the room in your heart and home for a dog (or cat), PLEASE check your local shelter, you will be saving a life, and you will get SO much love in return. Thank you!

Flashback Friday ~ My Best Friend Sue, Gone But Always in My Heart!

.

Friday Photo Flashback

Alicia from More Than Words says she started Friday Photo Flashback because "I have so many pictures from my PRE-digital camera days. I thought it would be fun to scan them and share them here with you.. I'm having so much fun doing this, that I would love for you to join me, too! So dig out the photo albums and put your scanner to good use! Don't forget to link up so we can all visit and comment on each others blogs!"

Sunday the 22nd would have been my best friend in the whole world, Sue's birthday. Sue and I were best friends for over 30 years, she was maid-of-honor in my wedding to Bill and I was maid-of-honor in her wedding.

My Wedding - 1997

She was the kind of friend that you could call on the phone at any time day or night and with just the word "hello" either one of us could tell what mood the other was in and say, "I'll be right over."

It was really hard on us both when I moved to Florida because it meant that we wouldn't be seeing each other at least once a week and on the phone every day. She spent my last day in Connecticut with me, while I finished packing and getting the cars ready to take the trip. When she left we both hugged and cried for a long time.

We still kept in contact with each other via the phone, letters, cards, and e-mail, but it just wasn't the same. I missed her SO much.

Then our contact got less and less, but when we would talk, it would be for hours and it was like we never even lost contact. Until letters, cards, and phone calls I sent or made weren't returned... until I got an anniversary card that simply said "Love, Sue" - it just wasn't like her at all.

It was 2009, and I remember the phone call like it was yesterday - it came from Sue's daughter, Kimberly. Sue was in the hospital.... she was extremely sick, she had been hiding it from me. She had kidney cancer that had spread to her lungs, metasticized and was now in heart failure, she didn't have long to live.

Normally I would do what she would have done for me, jumped on a plane and gone to be with her... but I couldn't do that. I had major spinal surgery 6 weeks before this happened and I could barely walk, let alone get on an airplane. I was devastated, my best friend in the whole world had to go through the worst thing in her life without me. I know she knew in her heart, she knew I was there with her in my heart - we were always like that for each other, there is no way it would end now.

So although Sue has been gone from this world for 3 years, she will never be gone from my heart.... Happy birthday my dear friend, I love you and I miss you, and I will never forget you!!!

Happy Birthday to My Dad - You are Missed

.

Today would have been my father's 73rd birthday, and while my childhood wasn't always the best, there are some things that I do cherish about my youth. My father gave me my love of music, reading, and photography.

My dad passed away a few years ago and there are still times I still think of him and miss some things about him. I was going through photos the other day and found this one of my dad and his older brother, it was taken just as my dad was starting to decline. It is one of the few photos of my dad and the only one of my uncle that I have.

(L-R) Uncle Raymond Sullivan and My Dad, Donald Sullivan

Wishing you were still here daddy, so that we could have worked things out and had a happier life together. Wherever you are, know that on this, your birthday, I am thinking of you and missing you.

Happy 6th Birthday Mia Judith Shewbridge

.

Today was Mia's 6th birthday and we celebrated by taking her, just her - to the dismay of the other four doggies - on our errands.

Mia was so excited to be in the car alone with Bill and I. Plus we went to pick up clothes at the dry cleaners, we went to the bank - and saw our favorite teller, Michelle, who of course offered Mia a dog biscuit. Mia, being the snobby eater that she is, stuck her nose up in the air at it.

We then went to the MD's office and Bill went inside to pick up my RX... Mia sat looking out the window until he came back. At the pharmacy, she got so much more love and attention, she was so happy that I even got a kiss from her. That is a rare treat... she usually only kisses Bill, he's her pet.

When we got home, the other doggies gave us our usual happy dance and kisses welcome home; then they were all over Mia - sniffing her, licking her, wanting to know where she had been, what she had been doing. It was quite funny.

What a nice day we had with our special little lady, who is now our oldest doggie in the house.

Happy birthday, Mia, we love you!

Happy 70th Birthday to the Most Wonderful Man in the World

.

On March 8th 1942, my favorite person in the whole world was born.....

William Edward Shewbridge

I am SO grateful that he came into my life in 1995 and changed it forever. From the day we met, he made me feel special, confident, and happy.

He has the best sense of humor, loves the same kind of music I do, loves to try new things, and loves to go on adventures together; whether it be to a local museum, Disney World, or a cruise around Europe.

He is also the MOST helpful husband a woman could ever ask for... he does all the housework (except for laundry and cooking, but he helps when I ask), and does a fantastic job at all of it. He even helps take care of all of the doggies, walking them and even has started helping me bathe and groom them.

He is also the best step-father to my boys - and they would be the first to tell you that.

I love spending every day with him and only hope that I can spend 70 more years with him. =)

So, Bill, my love, thank you for making my life wonderful and for all the little things you do to make me smile every single day. I am the luckiest woman in the world. Have a very happy birthday. I love you with all my heart!
